Dna Damage and Radiocesium in Channel Catfish from Chernobyl
نویسندگان
چکیده
The explosion of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant resulted in some of the most radioactively contaminated habitats on earth. Despite evacuation of all human inhabitants from the most contaminated areas, animals and plants continue to thrive in these areas. This study examines the levels of contamination and genetic damage associated with radiocesium in catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) from the cooling pond and a control site. In general, catfish from the cooling pond exhibit greater genetic damage, and the amount of damage is related to the concentration of radiocesium in individual fish. Genetic damage is primarily in the form of DNA strand breaks, with few micronuclei being observed in contaminated fish. The possible roles that acclimation and adaption play in the response to high levels of radiation exposure are discussed. Keywords—Catfish Chernobyl DNA damage Micronuclei Radiocesium

Cryopreservation of Mesopotamian catfish (Silurus triostegus H., 1843) spermatozoa: Effects of diluents and osmotic pressure on spermatozoa DNA damage, rate and duration of motility
This study was performed to evaluate the effectiveness of three different conditions of osmotic pressure (325, 365 and 385 mOsm kg-1) in combination with dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and NaCl or glucose on spermatozoa DNA damage, rate and duration of motility. Sperm was collected from eight healthy mature Mesopotamian catfish, evaluated microscopically and pooled at 25 °C. The pooled sperm samples...
متن کاملPredicted spatio-temporal dynamics of radiocesium deposited onto forests following the Fukushima nuclear accident
The majority of the area contaminated by the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant accident is covered by forest. To facilitate effective countermeasure strategies to mitigate forest contamination, we simulated the spatio-temporal dynamics of radiocesium deposited into Japanese forest ecosystems in 2011 using a model that was developed after the Chernobyl accident in 1986. The simulation revea...
متن کاملRadiocesium concentrations in wild mushrooms collected in Kawauchi Village after the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant
It is well known from the experience after the 1986 accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant that radiocesium tends to concentrate in wild mushrooms. In this study, we collected wild mushrooms from the Kawauchi Village of Fukushima Prefecture, located within 30 km of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, and evaluated their radiocesium concentrations to estimate the risk of internal r...
متن کاملComplete sequence and characterization of the channel catfish mitochondrial genome.
In order to support analysis of channel catfish populations and genetic improvement programs, the channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus, mitochondrial genome was completely sequenced and revealed gene structure and gene order common to vertebrates. Nucleotide sequence comparisons of cytochrome b (Cytb) and cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COI) demonstrated genetic separation of the genera Ictalur...
متن کاملRadiocesium Distribution in Bamboo Shoots after the Fukushima Nuclear Accident
The distribution of radiocesium was examined in bamboo shoots, Phyllostachys pubescens, collected from 10 sites located some 41 to 1140 km from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, Japan, in the Spring of 2012, 1 year after the Fukushima nuclear accident. Maximum activity concentrations for radiocesium ¹³⁴Cs and ¹³⁷Cs in the edible bamboo shoot parts, 41 km away from the Fukushima Daiichi...
